Bulging bellies aren’t only an issue for getting back into your skinny jeans, they are also problematic to your health. High levels of belly fat are associated with heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. But you can reduce your risk for all of these by losing the extra flab around your belly.

Follow these simple tips for a lean belly:
  • Keep It Simple. Stick to simple foods. The closer you can keep your foods to 1 ingredient the better. Odds are, you’ll spend a lot of time in the produce and meat aisles of your local supermarket but that’s a good thing. Fewer ingredients mean a healthier food source. The chemical additives in processed and packaged foods are not good for your health or your waistline.
  • Eat Frequently. Manage your body’s energy throughout the day by eating frequently throughout the day. Starting with breakfast, eat every 3 hours. If you’re never hungry, you’re less likely to overindulge when you do eat. Make sure each meal has a good mixture of protein, fat, fiber and healthy carbs. Eating throughout the day helps offset one of the biggest challenges: being too hungry to stick to your healthy eating plan.
  • Stay Hydrated. Drink a lot throughout the day but drink smart. Be mindful of empty calories you might be adding to your diet through beverages. Nearly 450 calories per day for the average American’s diet come from sugar-laden beverages. Improve your fluid intake by adopting a watering schedule. You’ll crave sodas and other drinks less if you stay hydrated on water.
  • Make Your Own Meals. At the end of a long, stressful day, it’s extremely tempting to stop by the drive-thru then go home and make your own meal but you’ll most likely end up consuming fewer calories if you make your own food. Restaurants today tend to serve portions that are too large, are not packed with nutrients and are loaded with unhealthy calories. Keep your fridge and freezer packed with easy to make healthy food options and always make enough for a healthy lunch the next day.
