Young girl getting ready for running race
Who wouldn’t want the metabolism of a teenage boy – eat as much as you want, never gain a pound. Unfortunately, the majority of us were not born so lucky. For some of us, our metabolism forces us to monitor every morsel of food and every ounce of liquid or risk the consequences known as weight gain. But there are things you can do to help boost your metabolism.

Every time you eat, enzymes in your body turn that food into the energy that keeps your heart beating, mind thinking and legs moving. The faster your metabolism runs, the more calories you burn. And, the more calories you burn, the easier it is for you to lose weight. Even though our metabolism tends to burn at a particular speed based on your gender and genetics, there is plenty of wiggle room.
Simple changes such as exercising and eating right can help burn an additional 500-600 calories per day. But there are a few additional changes you can make to your routine to turbocharge your metabolism. Follow the tips below to boost your metabolism.

Eat a Healthy Breakfast.

Eat a healthy breakfast every single day. Even if you don’t think you are hungry, eat a good breakfast. Not eating breakfast sends your body into starvation mode which slows your metabolism to a crawl in order to conserve energy. Try a mix of lean protein with complex carbohydrates and healthy fats to keep you feeling fuller longer and supercharge your metabolism.

Sip Java.

Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system by increasing your heart rate and breathing. A study published in the journal Physiology & Behavior found that the average metabolic rate of people who drank caffeinated coffee increased 16% over those who drank decaf. However, make sure to not overload your coffee with sugars, milk or half-n-half.

Pick Protein.

Add protein to every meal to help build and maintain lean muscle. Muscle burns more calories than fat, even at rest, so more muscle means more calories burned. Aim for about 30 grams of protein with every meal.

Grab Some Green Tea.

Green tea contains a plant compound called ECGC which promotes fat burning. In one study, people who consumed the equivalent of three to five cups a day for 12 weeks decreased their body weight by 4.6%. For maximum effect, let your tea steep for 3 minutes and drink it while it’s still hot.

Making small changes to your daily routine can help you turbocharge your metabolism, burn more calories and lose weight faster.
